Its Dead Jim

Today I shut down the server I had been running for years. I’d been using Nextcloud for a long time. Some things it did well, but other things not so much. The built‑in mail client was frustrating, and when the alternative SnappyMail became unsupported, I had to move to a solution outside of Nextcloud. I had also had ongoing issues with photo management solutions provided they were slow, buggy, and ultimately it was time to just move on

Once I had migrated the most important functions away from Nextcloud, I went in search of better solutions. After testing several options, I found OpenCloud—a distant cousin of Nextcloud with some key differences that really boosted its performance. It doesn’t require a database, use PHP, and it is much lighter on resources.

Long story short, I was able to integrate everything I had previously spun off from Nextcloud. OpenCloud has been stable, lightweight, and easy to work with. I still have a learning curve on the new app but don't see myself going back to Nextcloud... RIP
